TACT Case Study: Lily

Lily

LILY BEFORE TACT:

When I first brought Lily home to foster it was quickly apparent she was severely under-socialized and fearful of new environments and people. She would attempt to run and hide from anything or anyone new. If she felt she was not able to run, she would bark and growl. In new environments she would literally crawl so low that her belly dragged on the ground, her tail look permanently tucked under her body. It was heartbreaking to see.

I realized Lily was not able to be placed for adoption until she could improve her fear response to the world and I needed professional assistance for such a severe fear response. I learned of Julie's work with fearful dogs and contacted her immediately.

LILY AFTER TACT:

The TACT program has been an absolute miracle for Lily! Lily has made amazing progress in overcoming her fear at my home; she now actively plays with toys, explores the yard and can meet visitors without fear. Using techniques from our sessions such as the "check it" and the "strangers secret handshake" have helped Lily so much. We are now starting to use this positive behavior to expose Lily to the world outside my home and I have complete confidence she will continue to progress. Throughout this process I have decided to adopt Lily. She makes a wonderful addition to my family. I regularly evaluate dogs in animal control facilities for the PILOT for Pets program, which moves MA dogs from animal control facilities into other programs for placement into an adoptive home. Many dogs are fearful reactive making them difficult to place into adoption programs, they may ultimately face euthanasia. However, now that the TACT program has been developed and I have seen the incredible results, I believe the lives of many dogs will be spared. TACT provides training to address their special needs, resulting in happy, safe dogs that will make wonderful companions and members of our communities.
